Semolina Vegetable Chowmein
Chowmein is a Chinese stir-fried noodles recipe. Chinese recipe is very popular in India, and there are lots of variants of vegetarian Chinese delicacies. This recipe is vegan. Chowmein is also a popular Indian street food like Hakka noodles and tastes like the chowmein served in street style carts. It is popular in India, Nepal, UK and the US. Two types of chowmein are available in the market: steamed chowmein and crispy chowmein is also known as Hong Kong-style chowmein. Chowmein is prepared in oil with vegetables and is a great option that’s low in calories and high in nutrients. It is ideal for a party starter or an appetizer recipe. Some people get confused about chowmein and noodles.
CHOWMEIN is a dish made from noodles. Chowmein comes from two words; ‘CHOW’ means fried and ‘MEIN’ refers to noodles. So moral of the story is all chowmein are noodles, but all noodles are not chowmein. NOODLES is a type of food that is made from dough, which is rolled flat and cut, stretched, or into long strips or strings. There are many types of noodles ranging from plain flour noodles to semolina, whole wheat flour, or rice flour. Noodles can be refrigerated for short-term storage and stored for later use. Many dishes are made from noodles like chowmein, baked noodles, chilled noodles, basic noodles, fried noodles, noodle soup, and many more. All dishes are made from noodles are lip-smacking and everyone loves noodles, especially kids who are a big fan of chowmein. Sometimes you can pack chowmein for a kid’s lunch meal. Add lots of veggies with noodles to make it healthier.
Chowmein is made with many other kinds of noodles in the Indian-Chinese style. Today I am going to share the recipe of SEMOLINA VEGETABLE CHOWMEIN. Semolina is made from durum wheat, a variety of wheat. When ground into flour, durum wheat is known as SEMOLINA. It is commonly used all over the world in bread, pizza, pasta, porridge, and many more dishes. Flour is more golden in color than all-purpose flour. It has a mild aroma. In India, it is also known as RAVA and SUJI.
In India, it used to make upma, idli, halwa, kheer, and other dishes. Semolina has some amount of complex carbohydrates, protein, and fiber. On the other hand, white flour is rich in simple carbs without fiber and protein. So semolina is a healthier choice. It is high in protein, high in complex carbohydrates, and has potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, calcium. It digested more slowly and has a low glycemic index, which is good for helping reducing weight.
While preparing the chowmein, add all the sauces (chili sauce, soy sauce, ketchup) and vinegar, according to your taste. The adding of ketchup gives a nice sweet, tangy taste. In addition to various sauces, these Vegetable chowmein noodles taste good. It’s own and doesn’t need any side dish. It can be served with any Chinese gravy e.g., Gobi Manchurian gravy, veg Manchurian or mushroom manchurian.
This recipe of Semolina Vegetable chowmein is loaded with lots of vegetables and flavored with different sauces. You can add finely chopped green beans, baby corn, cabbage, carrot, mushroom, capsicum, etc., to make it healthier. So let’s start to make this delicious recipe.
INGREDIENTS
- Semolina - 1 cup
- Water - 1 litre
- Coconut oil -2tbsp
- Chopped garlic -3/4
- Chopped onion -1
- Few chopped green beans
- Chopped carrot - 2
- Capsicum - 1 cup
- Few green onions
- Soya sauce - 2 tsp
- Vinegar - 1tsp
- Salt as per taste
- Black pepper as per taste
DIRECTIONS
- Heat a pan with 1 litre of water and semolina 1 cup.
- Boil for 10mins or until soft.
- Using a sieve remove excess water.
- Heat a pan and add 2tbsp coconut oil.
- Add chopped garlic and chopped onion.
- Cook for 1 min and add chopped carrot and green beans.
- Cook for 10mins and add chopped capsicum and green onions.
- Cook for 5mins on high flame.
- Add boiled semolina, 2tsp soya sauce, 1tsp vinegar and salt as per taste.
- Mix it nicely, sprinkle some black pepper and serve hot.
